Must Love Fashion
Contemporary Romance
By Deborah Garland
Release Date: August 7, 2017

Keywords: Contemporary, Romance, Novel, Fashion, Widower, Model, Second Chance

Gwendolyn Mallory has landed her dream job. After years at a small fashion retailer, she’s been given a chance to show off her public relations skills for a major brand. What woman wouldn’t be excited to work for Prada in New York City?

Former male model turned Prada Brand Manager, Andrew Morgan is ready to move on with his life—his wife passed away from cancer fifteen months ago. Even though he and Gwen share an initial fiery spark, getting involved with a co-worker has always been on Andrew’s to-don’t list.

The weeks leading up to an L.A. fashion show bring Andrew and Gwen closer to the flame. At night, she dreams of this tall handsome man taking her on his desk. And Andrew is having a hard time keeping his own fantasies under control. But when one of the designers vies for Gwen’s affections, Andrew is awash with jealousy. And out of excuses.

After the show, they share an intense, passionate kiss and some killer heavy petting in one of the dressing rooms. And in her bed, Gwen brings out the man Andrew used to be, wild and hungry. But in the afterglow of their bliss, Andrew learns Gwen has been hiding something about her health. Unable to deal with all that pain again, he leaves.

During a business trip to Milan, Gwen and Andrew give into the heat still smoldering between them. Then Gwen finds out she’s about to be transferred to Italy. Andrew doesn’t want to hold her back from such a great opportunity, but he can’t live without her. He proposes in hopes of keeping her in New York, with him.
What woman wouldn’t be excited to marry a devilishly handsome man in a Prada wedding gown?

EXCERPT:
It was a secret Gwen
would keep throughout the day. A secret for her and Andrew to share.

Gwen and Andrew… That did
have a nice ring to it.

“So, he takes up a lot of
oxygen in the room, doesn’t he?” Andrew pushed on one of his knees and stood.

“Salvatore’s all showy
though.” Gwen fingered the skirt and swooshed the fabric back and forth.

“Do you prefer a man who
is more subtle?”

It was the first time
he’d dared to ask her personal preferences for a mate, and before he could
retract his question or dilute it, she said firmly, “Yes, on the surface.” And smoldering underneath. Like you Andrew.

He stepped a few inches
away. “I’m still concerned all the attention will be on you in that dress.” He held his chin, smooth and fresh.

“I was planning on wearing
my hair up.” She gathered a handful of waves and swept them away from her face.
But when he only stared at her bracelets as they clanged together, she let the
bundle fall. “Or—”

“No. No.” The words
caught in his throat. His fingers brushed past her cheek, lifting the hair off
her shoulders again. “This is perfect.”

Yes,
it is perfect.
And he should be kissing her by now.
Those amazing lips, pink and full on hers…and on other parts of her body,
making her feel alive.

His eyes bore into hers,
but he said nothing. Gwen preferred to not
have to make the first move. How would she know if Andrew really wanted her in
the first place, and wasn’t just taking advantage of a willing partner? But how
long could she wait for him, before a crazy impulse took hold of her?

“I guess it’s settled.
I’m wearing my hair up tomorrow,” she whispered, locking eyes with him.

He cleared his throat and
stepped back, letting her hair fall. The weight of so many waves warmed her
skin, even though she preferred the heat coming off his body. She stepped back
as well and slipped into co-worker mode. “Andrew, be honest. Is this dress…too
much? I prefer clothes that are simple and classic. Conservative even.”

“I would call you
classic, Gwen. But not simple. You wear our clothes beautifully.” He ran his
hand over the suit jacket she had draped on a desk chair. “The way they sit on
you tells a story of…of the woman we know other women want to be.”

The compliment left her
breathless. “Thank you, Andrew.”

“No, Gwen. I want to
thank you.” His shoulders softened. “I need you to know, I couldn’t have done
this without you.”

“That’s not true.” She
swiped at eyes she suspected were shiny with tears, she wouldn’t let fall.
Better to be respected as an equal, and not thought of as a weepy lightweight.
“You’ve run plenty of these shows.”

“Yes, and I know what it
takes to pull this off. There was no way I could have done what you’ve done…for
this show.” He ran a hand through his
hair, his wedding band was—gone!

The sight took Gwen’s own
breath away. She twisted her hair to the side, to keep her hands busy. “Did you
want to do one final walk through for tomorrow?”

“No. We’re set.” He bent
down to the pick up the shoebox. His back straightened, emphasizing his
dramatic height.

She moved toward Andrew
to hug him. Immediately there was a different feel to his touch from the night
of their first drink. The night when everything had turned around. And upside
down. His fingers pressed into her skin. His body molded against hers. Oh, the
smell of him, musky and woodsy. Masculine. There it was, his heart, beating
wildly. There was so much of this man, his heart must work so hard to pump his
rich blood through so many veins.

The feel of his grip
softening, meant it was time for her to let go. “Have a good night Andrew.” She
touched his hands and leaned upward for a kiss on the cheek. The edge of his
mouth—warm and tender as she remembered—caught the corner of her lips. Tickle, Tickle went her stomach.

A strand of her long hair
caught in his collar, binding them together for a brief moment. Creating a
bridge that could bring them together…if someone was brave enough to cross.

Alex Overstreet is exceptional.

Mature beyond his years, he understands the value of education and where having one can take him. Adverse circumstances are no match for the “anything is possible” residing in his soul, a place where self-pity need not enter. His future is mapped in his mind. Staying the course will bring a worthwhile end game.

Enter India Blue Kirkland.

The most popular girl in school is the unknown Alex failed to factor into his carefully calculated life plans. She is everything he is not—outgoing and popular. A chance encounter with her sets into place a life-long love affair.

Together they find a passion and embrace the best of their different worlds while exploring the wonder of love.  Both are more than ready for a future together. But Alex’s family situation looms in the background, and eventually catches up to him, forcing him to make sacrifices that change the course of his relationship with India.  Though driven apart, their love never wavers.

Years later, Alex is successful on a large scale professionally, yet emptiness clings to him like free-floating lint to a dark suit. India should have been a part of it all.  He’s never moved on from her. She is the love of his life.  Meanwhile, India is trapped in a marriage and longs for what she had with Alex.  One glance of Alex at her father’s funeral sparks a romance that never died.
Retrouvailles validates the compelling power of first love and how the snapshots of moments together matter most. Those snapshots representing sweet moments in time can be more compelling than a lifetime spent together.

EXCERPT:

Alex sipped a Presidente while sitting on the deck outside “The Parched Pelican.”

Indian Rocks Beach had fancier places than the open-air tavern facing the Gulf of Mexico. Alex just preferred the dive with the dowdy name. The hand-painted sign showing a cartoon pelican with muscles and tattoos cracked him up—Florida tacky at its finest. Plus, no steel drum bands, no Tiki torches and, best of all, few patrons at that time of day. You could drink a cold beer and just be. Alex preferred to blend in with the scenery, be invisible, thus, serenity.

A salty breeze grazed his face and the rhythm of the gentle surf performed the duty of a fairy-tale sandman, making heavy his eyelids. Giving in to such an urge would be his normal inclination. Take a few steps down to the beach, stretch out in the sand underneath the azure sky, and suddenly he’d be blowing Z’s like Dagwood Bumstead.

Not today.

Beads of sweat formed on his upper lip while his thumb picked off the label from the bottle of Dominican beer. He stared at the naked green bottle, hoping a state of nothingness would come to him. If he studied the inanimate object long enough he might forget the troublesome reality weighing heavy on his mind.

Maybe they’d waltz around the subject of her pending doom, tiptoeing like one of those Russian gymnasts on the balance beam, tension…tension…tension, but cool. Dying was an extremely personal matter and something she might not want to share with him. If she did, he couldn’t show pity and pity was hard to disguise. The slightest sign of it would piss her off. Taking a direct approach suited India.

Alex undid the top buttons of the light cotton shirt he wore loose at the waist and ordered another Presidente. Several months had passed since he awoke wearing socks and a monster hangover, unable to remember where he’d parked the car. The moment frightened him into an abstinence pledge.

Feeling too good for too long had brought him to the conclusion that his initial solution felt too much like Alcoholics Anonymous. He rationalized the step lacking from the guiding twelve steps was moderation; and all that guilt if you fell off the wagon for a couple of drinks. Besides, he enjoyed alcohol too much to quit. Common sense told him that all the alcohol in the world would not change his life. Thus, hoping to avoid self-destruction, he imposed a three-beer limit, installed like a father does a governor to his son’s go-cart to prevent him from driving too fast.

Alex’s eyes closed and he rocked back in his chair, evoking a sad moan from the deck constructed of rough-hewn two-by-fours. Balancing his body with one leg resting on an adjacent chair, he heard steps approach. A cold palm touched his face, then two moist lips met his for a lingering moment.

EXCERPT:

I jerked off after my late lunch, thinking I’d be more relaxed and in control once Jade arrived for my…little test. No such damn luck. Nancy rang to let me know Jade had arrived and I instantly went hard. I wanted to tell Nancy to just send her on in, but the gentleman in me wouldn’t allow such an action, hard-on or not.

Standing, I buttoned my suit coat to hide the bulge in my pants and headed for the office door. When I pulled it open, our gazes collided and my attention slid down her neck to where her pulse thrummed. Satisfaction coursed through me.

“Jade,” I smiled, knowing the lust simmering inside of me shone in my eyes. “Come on in.” I stepped back, gesturing her past me and breathing in the scent of snickerdoodles. My hand moved without thought to rest on her lower back as she walked into my office. Her breath caught, and a quick glance up into my face had me jerking my hand away.

Fuck. Can’t touch.

I cleared my throat and shut the door behind her. “You look amazing.”

Pink tinged her cheeks. “Thank you.”

“Why don’t you have a seat on the couch today?” I motioned toward the loveseat beneath my office’s lone window with its upward slanting blinds for privacy.

I sat in my office chair but swiveled to my right to face her.

Jade perched on the couch’s edge, knees together and hands folded on her lap.

I took my time drinking in the sight of her—barely there makeup, hair caressing her shoulders, naked lips, and that dress.

Goddamn, she’d never looked better. The color of her name, the dress wrapped snug around her, the cleavage of her pert breasts barely concealed by the deep V-neck. Stiff nipples, bare legs, and strappy tan heels…and if she followed my thoughts for our meeting, no panties.

My cock strained, hands shook.

Get a grip, man. You’re thirty-five years old, for Christ’s sake, not some teenage jerkoff who can’t control his shit.

“How am I supposed to keep my hands off you?” I murmured, tearing my attention from the darkness between her legs.

Her blush deepened as she shrugged.

I forced myself to settle in my chair. “Sit back, darling. Relax.”

She eased backward into the couch, but tension hitched her shoulders high.

I wanted the test I had in mind to reveal what I hoped it would, but being strung tight would hinder her response to me. “How was your week?”

“Long and boring, same as last week.” She sucked in her lower lip and released it, sending another jolt of lust straight to my cock. “I’ll admit, my nervousness over today probably made it worse.”

“What are you nervous about?”

“The meaning of your note. Your plan.” Her voice escaped as a whisper, and she swallowed. “Wondering if you’ll finally touch me beyond a mere brush of fingers.”

My hand flexed at the thought as my heart picked up pace. “More than anything, I want that exact thing.”

We stared at each other for a few long seconds, the sexual tension thick between us.

I needed to wait until Nancy left. “All in good time,” I finally said, needing to clear my throat. “For now, talk to me. Tell me about your hobbies. What you like to do for fun.”

Jade heaved a deep breath, her breasts rising and drawing my focus downward. Pebbled and begging for my teeth, her nipples pressed tight against the green material covering them.

“Talk to me, Jade,” I encouraged, returning my gaze to her face with a slight smirk which she returned.
A half hour flew by as we chatted, and the inner office ring of my phone startled me. I picked up. “Yes, Nancy?”

“If you don’t mind, I’m going to head out early for the day.”

“That’s fine. I’ll finish up with Miss Matthews here in a few minutes. Would you mind locking the front door on your way out?” I asked as always whenever she left before me.

She agreed and I hung up, turning back to Jade. Her brow furrowed, she played with the ties of her wrap dress.

“Jade.” She glanced up. “Close your eyes for me.”

She obeyed without hesitation, her brow smoothing, and my chest swelled with the trust she showed me.

“I’m going to tell you a story, and I want you to imagine it in your mind. Can you do that for me?”

Her plump lower lip disappeared inside her mouth again as she nodded.

The sound of the front door closing filtered through the blood rushing between my ears.

Time to play.

SoH_Cover

Blurb:

Meet Bob. Bob is the guy between the lines of every love story you ever met. The lucky chance, the twist of fate, the astounding coincidence that sets sparks flying. Never seen, but always there.

Today Bob is assigned to help Jenny find love. But there is something more than bad luck working against the quirky librarian. Bob might have to save her life, before he can help her find love.

And he can’t do that from the shadows….

Excerpt:

Let me tell you a story. Stop me if you have heard it before.

We start with a woman, it could be any woman, of any age. She is alone. She thinks she is hawks, awkward and plain, and never sees her own beauty. It’s is a cruel fact of life that it only takes one person to tell you that you are ugly, and you will believe it.

She starts in a prison. Not a real prison, well not usually anyway, but a metaphorical kind. Maybe a marriage whose passions have faded, or maybe a small town where nothing happens, or overly protective parents.

Way over there is an ambition. Maybe true love, maybe the big city, or overthrowing the evil empire.

One day our girl breaks free. She runs for her life and she bumps into this guy. If she happens to be a princess, then he is literally the first guy she meets. They hate each other. They bicker. They spark. But they make each other laugh, and by a cruel twist of fate, they end up stuck together as they embark on a quest to reach her ambition.

At some point they stumble into a thrilling situation. A chase, a fight, an accident where the handbrake fails and the parked car rolls into a ditch. Something to set the heart racing.

Then they pause for breath. They talk. They learn they aren’t so different and under all the sparks and insults is something tender and sweet. Something good and warm.

When hope wears thin, and the ambition seems so far away, the guy convinces the girl to give it one last try. To take a chance. To hold his hand and know he will be there if she succeeds or fails. And in that moment, in that one look, that one kiss, nothing else matters.

Excerpt:

“By the time I turned sixteen, I was pregnant. I became a child bride at seventeen, married to an adult-sized infant with chest hair, with a real live baby doll to take care of, as well. That marriage was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. Before I hit twenty-one, it was over.” She heard the bitterness in her voice and stopped talking.

“That had to be rough, but isn’t it time to stop beating yourself up about it? At least you had enough sense to get out.”

The compassion, the offer of understanding in his voice almost overwhelmed Joely. She wondered if he’d be as sympathetic if he knew she had left her precious little boy with her alcoholic husband while she worked. And it took four years and a serious injury before she clued in to the fact her toddler didn’t get all his bruises from being overactive and clumsy.

No, Cole had it wrong; she didn’t have a whole lot of sense when she was younger.

He pushed his coffee cup aside and leaned forward in his chair to stare sharply at her. She realized he must be very good at his investigative work. Those dark penetrating eyes would intimidate anyone into telling the truth when they flashed as fiercely as they were right now.

“You’re upset. I didn’t mean to do that,” he apologized. “I wanted to make you feel better.”

“Oh no, hey, I’m not upset with you. I actually appreciate your effort. I can’t remember the last time I had a conversation with a man who cared how I felt about myself. Men are usually much more concerned about how I feel about them.”

“You already told me you didn’t like me.” He smiled brilliantly, his eyes crinkling. “Whaddaya say to giving me a chance to change your mind?”

For just a moment, Joely saw beneath the laughing, self-confident grin to the flicker of loneliness in his eyes. He was new to the area, she remembered. He probably didn’t know many people, and here she was monopolizing the conversation. She ignored his question and posed one of her own.

“Why did you choose law enforcement for your career?”

His gaze unexpectedly turned cold. His features revealed no emotion, nothing to indicate why he suddenly shut down. The pause grew a little too long, giving Joely the impression he preferred not to answer.

“I take a lot of satisfaction out of my job, especially working with the kids,” he eventually replied, his voice back to that aggravatingly polite, neutral tone. “But it wasn’t a matter of choice so much as of doing what was expected.”

“Your parents said you had to become a cop?” Joely wanted to keep her mouth shut and let him do the talking, but stunned disbelief made her blurt it out before she could stop herself.

Cole smiled tightly. “My grandfather was a cop, same with my father. As far as they were concerned, there was no other suitable job for a Dennison, and they presumed I’d follow their lead. My mom didn’t get a say; she died when I was five.”

Joely let out an involuntary gasp of sympathy. “Oh, I’m sorry. How sad for you to grow up without a mother.” Not having a father had left a gaping hole in her childhood and even though her mom would’ve never won mother-of-the-year, she’d always given freely of her hugs and kisses. She was important to Joely, and Joely couldn’t imagine growing up without her.

Cole lifted a shoulder casually. “I survived. You don’t miss what you never really had.”

“Yes, you do,” she replied fiercely. “You miss it and you want it terribly. At least I did. I wanted a father more than I wanted anything else. It was the defining reality of my childhood. How can you say you didn’t miss your mother?”

Something hard and acrid flashed in his eyes, and he didn’t acknowledge her words. He pushed out of his chair abruptly. “We should get back to the detachment. Your son’s waited long enough.”

Excerpt:

“How would you bring in new business, though?”
I’m amazed that he seems to find our conversation interesting. He’s an audience willing to listen and I’ve not had that in a long time. Damn this crush of mine. It won’t be easy to tame after tonight.
“New menu items, specials, things like that. Start serving dessert, like pies. Easy cook items. With the new burgers I’ve created and a new décor, I’d open in the summer when the air is fresh and everyone is happy to be out of the snow, hungry for grilled food. I think we could do fine.”
“What’s your hold up?”
“Tony, Dad. It’s complicated.” I shrug. His arm feels good, and I have the overwhelming urge to nuzzle against it. “Did you kiss Amy Parker when you were twelve? She still brags about it.” Did I just ask him about kissing? What is wrong with me? Will this mouth of mine never shut up? Stop it, Stop it, stop it!
“That I did, in a closet over at Robert Anderson’s house.”
“Ew.”
“I was twelve and desperate. You can’t blame me. I do blame that stupid soda bottle.  And your first kiss?” There is a challenge in his voice.
“Kevin Monroe at the Klines Movie Theater. He sent me a six-page note the next day about how much he loved me, and I freaked out and dumped him.”
“Any regrets?”
I choke back a giggle. “Naw, ‘cept I remember I liked his cologne. It could have been aftershave, but it was nice.” It’s not half as nice as the Aramis that Patrick has on. Something about it sends a shiver up my spine that has nothing to do with the zombie waiting in Dad’s office.
“The dark isn’t so bad, now is it?”
“I guess not.”
Silence surrounds us. The fear that enveloped me seems to disappear.
“Are you seeing anyone?”
“No.” It sounds terrible now that I’ve said it out loud. Like I’m admitting to being a desperate and dateless leper.
“So,” he drawls out, “ever thought of dating a military guy?” He squeezes my fingers.
Is he serious?
His fingertip smooths over the rough callouses I’ve gained from years of hard work. Suddenly my wasted evening of not going out to celebrate is starting to look better. “I think it would depend on which military guy.”
“You’re killing me. You know that, don’t you?” His strangled tone only sets off a case of the giggles.
“Are you asking me out, Patrick?”
“Trying to, but you’re not making it easy.” The challenge is back in his voice.
“I wouldn’t mind a date or two,” I manage to squeak out. Breathe, Harper, just breathe, calmly through your nose, out your mouth. Sainted Mother of God, Patrick asked me out! I hit the jackpot! Now all I have to do is not hit him.

Nemma Wollenfang – Amidst the Strawberry Fields
Good grades, happy home, pampered life, perfect boyfriend – sixteen-year-old Beth has it all. She tells herself that… a lot. That is until the new students arrive from the recently-built Traveller’s Site, led by the rakishly handsome Razovan Verlak, who begins to turn her world upside-down. The school didn’t want them, the town tried to avoid them, and Beth is determined to ignore him—them. But Raz is not to be ignored, and he has his sights set on her.

With the autumn harvest due in, and her boyfriend and the usual harvesters notably absent, Beth and her mother have to accept alternative help to bring in their farm’s crops. And Raz is all too eager to oblige. But Beth is uneasy, and with good reason. Raz and his crew have developed a worrying reputation around town. Assault, vandalism, theft – it seems there’s nothing they haven’t done…according to rumour. But are the gossips to be believed?

Will Beth listen to the disturbing tales and keep her distance? Or will she decide for herself and get to know the real Raz as they work together, amidst the strawberry fields?
