Book Review: The Torment of Rachel Ames by Jeff Gunhus

Title: The Torment of Rachel Ames

Author: Jeff Gunhus

Genre: Horror

Publisher: Seven Guns Press

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rachel Ames is the main character of the story, she’s an author who goes to a remote cabin in the woods to clear her head and overcome her writer’s block. As Rachel enjoys the beauty of the lake and spends time with her handsome landlord John, she begins to unwind. However, her peacefulness is soon disrupted by a series of strange events, which include her weird neighbors Granger and Ollie, wolves, mysterious birds, fires, and the sounds of sirens in the distance. As the mysterious events unfold, Rachel begins to question her sanity. Can she figure out what’s happening? Is it all in her head or are the events real?
Rachel is a character that appears strong on the outside, but deep down she struggles with her own problems, which are revealed throughout the book. I won’t give too much away, but when you learn what she’s gone through you’ll understand the reason for her behavior.
I loved how descriptive the author was with the events, from everything to the weird next door neighbor Granger to the wolves and birds showing up on the cabin’s deck to the sirens echoing in the distance. Reading those scenes made you feel like you were trapped in that moment and experiencing the fear.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I thought it was a good horror story that kept you guessing what was really going on. As the mysterious events occurred, I was hooked and wanted to read on to find out what would happen. The ending was great; I thought it was a good way to explain the strange events and how they related to Rachel.
